Who Do You Say That I Am?
Theme: Having a Conviction About Jesus as the Savior of the World
Luke 9:18-22

INTRODUCTION

A.      Luke has given a thorough accounting to convict His friend of the things he had been taught about Jesus. Lk. 1:3-4

B.     Now, in seeming parallel, Luke records for Theophilos a question he needs to answer for himself, as Jesus gave to His disciples.

C.     We need to answer the same question today.

I.        LUKE’S CASE FOR THE CHRIST

A.      Birth foretold/fulfilled. Lk. 1-2

B.     Genealogy: Son of God. Lk. 3:23ff

C.     His work was executed with power/authority. Lk. 4:32

D.     Reaction to the works/teachings of Jesus.  Lk. 4-9

1.      Prophecies. Lk. 4:18-22

2.      Teachings. Lk. 4:23-29

3.      Miracles. Lk. 4:31-37

4.      Healings. Lk. 4:38-41

E.     Jesus sends disciples out with power and authority. Lk. 9:1-11

1.      They powerfully healed with Christ’s authority.

2.      Undoubtedly, many would see the power and authority as coming from Jesus

F.      Feeding of 5,000: implied questions about Jesus. v. 12-17

II.      WHO DO MEN SAY THAT I AM?

A.      All – believers/unbelievers – saw the same Jesus.

B.     Some thought Him to be John the Baptist. Lk. 9:7

C.     Others thought Him to be a Elijah. Lk. 9:8

D.     Still others, some other prophet. Lk. 9:19

III.    WHO DO YOU SAY THAT I AM?

A.      The closest followers believed Him to be the Christ (Hebrew: Messiah). Lk. 9:20

B.     They saw everything about Jesus from the “beginning”.

C.     Like Theophilos, we (today) have the same question we need to answer.

CONCLUSION

A.      Do you believe Him to be the Christ, or not?

B.     Your answer has eternal consequences.
