The Word on the Bible
A Study in Bible Authority |
| |
This quarter of Bible study is entitled The
Word on the Bible. We have no desire to
uphold what members of the "CHURCH OF CHRIST" have
always done. At the same time, we have no desire to
simply change what has been done. We want to look in the
Word. We want to examine the life of the Incarnate
Word. We want to see how those trained the Word handled
Scripture. When we do that, then we will be on the right
path.
We have only one source for our
study. We are not concerned with what the religious
scholars through the ages have said about how to use the
Bible. We are not concerned with what the majority of
modern religious people say about how to use the
Scripture. We are not concerned with how our enlightened
postmodern society would like to see us use the Bible.
We want to know how God wants us to use His Word.
II
Timothy 3:16-17 says:
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for
teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in
righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped
for every good work.
God's Scripture, which is not the work of
men alone, but the work of men moved by the Holy Spirit (II
Peter 1:20-21), is all we need to be equipped for
every good work. Therefore, as we do our best to be
approved workers who handle accurately the Word of truth (II
Timothy 2:15), we will rely on that Word to teach us
how.
When we are done, we will not use the Bible
in some special way because preachers in the "CHURCH OF
CHRIST" said to do it that way. We will use the
Bible in the way God's Word said we should use it. We
will have the confidence to have Biblical discussions with
each other and with those outside our fellowship regarding the
use of Scripture and how it applies to our lives and churches.
