Bearing Fruit That Glorifies God

I am always glad to hear that a church has given thought to why it exists.  The first time I looked up the Franklin church’s website, I nearly did a double back flip to see that a mission statement had already been developed.

To state it simply, the Franklin church exists in order to glorify God.  What a powerful, defining mission.  This church does not exist to please people, promote politics or pursue social reform.  We exist to glorify God.

This statement may seem rather vague to many people.  But to Christians, this simple statement speaks volumes.  It simply sums up and reminds us of what God has said about our purpose as members of Christ’s church and members of the Franklin Church of Christ.  (cf. Ephesians 3:21).

How do we glorify God?  In John 15:1-10, Jesus explained that we glorify God and prove to be Jesus’ disciples by bearing fruit.  We bear this fruit by abiding in Christ and in His love.  We abide in Christ and in His love, by allowing His word to abide in us and keeping His commandments.

Finally, we must not forget the warning Jesus gave.  Those who do not bear fruit will be cut off and cast into the fire.

What fruit glorifies God?  Paul clearly answered that question in Galatians 5:22-24:

      Love

      Joy

      Peace

      Patience

      Kindness

      Goodness

      Faithfulness

      Gentleness

      Self-Control

Following this brief list, Paul explained that those who bear the fruit of the Spirit have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.  In Galatians 2:20, a parallel passage, he also said that we no longer live.  Rather, Jesus lives through us, because we live by faith in Him.

Throughout the coming week, remember that you are here in order to bear fruit that glorifies God.  Which fruit will you bear this week?
